Q & A with the Docs: Varicose Veins + Prescription for Compression Stockings

At Physicians Vein Clinics the following questions that Dr. Gavin answers this week are two of the most commonly asked questions we get here at our clinics.

Q: I have varicose veins on my right leg, do I need to worry about my left leg?

A: For some patients vein disease is limited to one leg. For a majority of patients, varicose veins arise in both legs. It is a good idea to screen your “normal” leg at the time of your vein evaluation. If your veins are indeed healthy, no intervention is needed. It is still possible that you will develop vein disease down the road. Your veins should be re-evaluated if you develop symptoms of vein disease, you notice swelling or you notice skin changes.

Q: Do I need a prescription to get compression stockings?

A: No, you do not need a prescription to purchase compression stockings. The purpose of a prescription is to ensure that you purchase the appropriate level of compression, are measured correctly for fit, and purchase a quality garment. Each is of utmost importance if the compression garment is to be effective. Additionally, some insurance carriers require a provider-monitored compression trial and will require evidence of this trial in the form of a prescription.

These questions were answered by our board-certified physician, Dr. Gavin, MD, MS, DABVLM. You can find Dr. Gavin in our Burnsville, MN; Eagan, MN; and Plymouth, MN vein clinics.
