Q & A with the Docs: Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure we do almost daily and, you guessed it, we certainly get a lot of questions about it here at Physicians Vein Clinics. Dr. Hansen answers, today, two questions that come up often during our consultations today all around Sclerotherapy.

Q: I work standing on my feet all day, how long will it be before I can return to work after foam sclerotherapy?

A: At Physicians Vein Clinics, we feel that you would be able to return to work immediately after the procedure. Although, we would want you to wear your graduated compression stockings. We put very few restrictions on our patients when treated. It is very rare that a patient needs to take ANY time off of work.

Q: I have bumps in the treated veins after sclerotherapy, Is that normal?

A: Actually, this is fairly common following treatment of veins. Treatment of the veins will stop the blood flow but some of the blood can become trapped in the veins. This is more common with the treatment of larger veins. Occasionally, the trapped blood can cause inflammation in the vein, and then it is called phlebitis. In general, we are not concerned about the trapped blood and it will resolve over time. The larger the vein, the more time it will take to resolve. If you are concerned please see a vein specialist at Physicians Vein Clinics.

These questions were answered by our board-certified physician, Dr. Hansen, MD, DABVLM, RPhS. You can find Dr. Hansen in our Sioux Falls, SD; Watertown, SD; and Fargo, ND vein clinics.
