Q & A with the Docs: Sclerotherapy Part 2

Sclerotherapy is one procedure we have a lot of patient questions on. It is a wonderful procedure for cosmetic spider veins, but also an excellent option for getting rid of spider and varicose veins that are causing pain to a patient. Dr. Hansen is here to answer two burning questions about Sclerotherapy.

Q: Will sclerotherapy permanently get rid of spider veins?

A: Yes, sclerotherapy will permanently close the treated veins but you do need to remember that over time you will very likely develop more spider veins. These are not the same veins that were treated but are new veins that can become visible.

Q: Does sclerotherapy have to be repeated?

A: In general, I would say yes unless you have just a couple of small spider veins. Most will require more than 1 session of sclerotherapy. Also, over time new spider veins may develop.

These questions were answered by our board-certified physician, Dr. Hansen, MD, DABVLM, RPhS. You can find Dr. Hansen in our Sioux Falls, SD; Watertown, SD; and Fargo, ND vein clinics.
