Q & A with the Docs: General Anesthesia + Day-of Procedure Eating

We tend to get asked about anesthesia a lot around here - and to be frank, we only use local anesthesia for our procedures! Dr. Hansen dives in on anesthesia-related questions this week on Q&A with the Docs.

Q: Can I eat on the day of my procedures?

A: Yes, we do all procedures with you wide awake and only use local anesthesia. You do not need to go to the hospital for any of the procedures.

Q: Do I need general anesthesia for the ablation of my great saphenous veins?

A: The simple answer is NO. It would be an extremely rare case to need general anesthesia for the ablation of incompetent veins. The use of general anesthesia increases the risks of the procedure significantly as well as the costs and downtime. At Physicians Vein Clinics, we use local anesthesia which helps keep costs and risks down. You can even drive yourself to the clinic and then return to work the same day.

These questions were answered by our board-certified physician, Dr. Hansen, MD, DABVLM, RPhS. You can find Dr. Hansen in our Sioux Falls, SD; Watertown, SD; and Moorhead, MN vein clinics.
