Preventing Varicose Veins

Q: How can I prevent having varicose veins? I am 20 years old, but yet my varicose veins are getting enlarged and more severe.

A: Unfortunately, you cannot prevent varicose veins 100%. The number one cause of this type of vein disease is having a family history and because you already have varicose veins at age 20, you will very likely need treatment at some point in your life. To help prevent the progression of varicose veins, try a few of the following preventative measures:

1) Wear graduated compression stockings with a minimum of 20-30mmHg
2) Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight
3) Avoid sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time (I recommend a 5 minute walk once per hour)

Pregnancy is also another factor that contributes to the formation of varicose veins, which should be treated before or after pregnancy to avoid any complications.
