3 Reasons Why Veins Can Be Concerning

Most people will most likely agree that varicose veins are quite unsightly. Yet did you know that varicose veins could actually lead to serious health problems? Here at our South Dakota vein treatment practice, first-time visitors to our clinic are not aware of the following potentially dangerous health consequences of varicose veins:

Venous Ulcers

By and large, a venous ulcer is a long-lasting wound found in your leg or foot which could take more than 6 weeks to heal. In addition to delayed healing, symptoms could also include pain, itching, and swelling in the affected leg. This is common in individuals with circulation problems and diabetes.

Thrombophlebitis

It is very possible for a blood clot to form and stay just below the surface of your skin if you have varicose veins. Sometimes, it could be inflammation in the outermost walls of your veins. This is referred to as thrombophlebitis. Such condition could result from varicose veins as your blood vessels are stretched out too much allowing for the blood to pool in the vessel rather that flow through in one direction.

The most dangerous thing that could happen is when the blood clot travels into the bloodstream and starts blocking circulation, referred to as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).  DVT becomes life-threatening when a blood clot dislodges itself from a vein and makes its way to the lungs, heart, and other vital organs. Stroke, heart attack, breathing problems, and other medical emergencies are the common consequences of a dislodged blood clot.
