A bulging ankle vein is a common symptom of varicose veins that we usually hear from our patients. Bulging veins are common among both men and women; approximately 23% percent of U.S. adults suffer from bulging veins, which are also known as varicose veins.

What are the Causes of Bulging Veins on the Legs?

Bulging veins can be caused by a variety of reasons. These prominent veins can be a common sign of vein dysfunction. When the valves don’t operate properly, blood pools and enlarge the vein. Inflammation and swelling are the common cause of bulging veins in the ankle.

Pregnancy and aging are also common risks for bulging. As people get older, their veins get weaken and couldn’t transmit effectively blood from the legs back to the heart. Pregnant women have a higher volume of blood but a lower blood flow. As they reach near the end of their pregnancy period, the uterus applies more pressure to the legs, leading to bulging veins.

Other causes of bulging veins include:

  • Abdominal tumor or mass

  • Blood clot

  • Inactivity: sitting or standing for long periods of time

  • Swelling

  • Thrombophlebitis

Additional Symptoms of Vein Disease

Here are some of the symptoms that might appear alongside your bulging ankle:

  • Leg aching - leg pain - leg heaviness: The symptoms worsen after a long-standing or sitting.

  • Skin Discoloration

  • Skin Rash

  • Varicose Vein

  • Spider Vein

Bulging veins, sometimes, can be a sign of a more serious medical condition. Seek medical care immediately if you notice:

  • Bleeding from injury to the vein

  • Sores or leg ulcers (open wound on the legs)

  • The skin on the ankle or calf thickening and changing the color

  • Warmth and redness in the leg

These could be symptoms of life-threatening conditions such as blood clots, tumors, or infections.

Complications of Bulging Veins

Once you’ve determined you do have bulging veins, it's important to diagnose the causes and receive proper treatments if needed. Leaving bulging veins untreated can increase the risk of potential complications such as:

  • Pulmonary Embolism – Blood clot forms, breaks down and travels to the lungs. The condition leads to shortness of breath and chest pain.

  • Superficial Vein Thrombosis – blood clot forms right below the skin's surface. Symptoms include limb pain, skin warmth around the vein, and red, inflamed skin along the vein.

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis – Blood clots develop deep in the veins throughout the body. It requires expertise and years of experience from a board-certified vein specialist to diagnose. The condition might cause swelling, leg aching, skin discoloration, etc.,

Treatment for Bulging Leg Veins

If you are looking for vein treatment options, the first step is to talk with a vein specialist who can diagnose your symptoms accurately and determine the best available treatment plan based on your personal needs.

At Physicians Vein Clinics are specialized in minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins, spider veins, and vein-related symptoms. We use the most advanced technology for all procedures. Our team of vein specialists is board-certified so you can rest assured that your vein problems are taken care of seriously.

In the early stages, bulging veins may be treated by conservative therapy including wearing compression stockings and exercising. More serious cases of bulging veins would require the diagnosis and specialized treatments by vascular doctors.

There are multiple treatment options for venous ablation and they include:

Ablation methods are minimally invasive procedures for treating refluxing veins.  Some of the procedures listed above are not covered by insurance companies. We currently use a combination of EVRFA or EVLA for the closure of refluxing veins. We feel these have the best long-term benefits and also are covered by all insurance companies if symptoms meet the insurance policies.

After an ablation, we ask our patients to walk for 20 minutes on one of the treadmills in our clinic. Recovery from a venous ablation is minimal and most patients can continue their normal daily routine without interruption. We do ask patients to wear compression stockings after their procedure to maintain blood flow and reduce swelling.
